 ABOUT VIRTUAL FAMAGUSTA:

This project is created by Eleftheria Sofroniou, a student at Birkbeck University in London, as part of her MA in Contemporary History and Politics and the module Public History in Practice.

In this project significant historical monuments and some representations of our cultural heritage are presented for three reasons: The first goal is to educate public about the rich history and varied cultural heritage of Cyprus. The second goal is, apart from promoting respect and appreciation of the historical monuments, to also motivate people to be aware of the protection, preservation and restoration of the monuments of this heritage for the future generations. The third goal is to disseminate the historical information about occupied Famagusta to the “global village”, all the people who are familiar with the technology and the “information society” and to help them shape their knowledge about history of Cyprus. I also encourage Greek-Cypriots refugees who have memories about these historical monuments to share with us their remembrances. Therefore, the blog will be transformed to a platform for the collection of valuable information about the occupied area of Famagusta. The crossword and the collective online game –based in the platform cahoot.it- that are embraced in my project can be useful for teachers and students. The teachers can use these interactive methods in their classrooms in order to catch the student’s attention, teaching history with a pleasant exciting way. Enjoy the virtual journey in occupied Famagusta!
